Sports Medicine I

In this course, students earn a certification in First Aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automatic external defibrillator (AED). The course introduces students to topics such as human anatomy and physiology, nutrition, medical terminology, injuries and illnesses, and legal and ethical issues in sports medicine. Students will learn and demonstrate emergency care, taping and wrapping of injuries, and apply other hands-on skills for treating injury. Students also examine prospective careers in the sports medicine field. Upon successful completion of this course, students are eligible to take Sports Medicine II and pursue industry certification as a personal trainer. 

Sports Medicine II 

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to take the National Academy of Sports Medicine-Certified Personal Trainer (NASM-CPT) exam. This course builds upon basic knowledge acquired in Sports Medicine I on topics such as exercise physiology, biomechanics, exercise program design, and injury prevention, assessment, treatment, and management. Students will assess fitness, measure body composition, and design exercise programs. Students prepare for a career in sports medicine, including completing an internship, practicing interview skills, and building a resume.

Ms. Krystal Randolph has been teaching Sports Medicine  at Richmond Technical Center since 2011. With a passion for anatomy and physiology along with safety and infection control, she strives to create an engaging and supportive learning environment that provides a real-world sports medicine career experience.

She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education with concentration in Athletic Training from Howard University. Her Master of Science degree in Athletic Training and Sports Medicine was received from Shenandoah University. Ms. Randolph is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and the Virginia Athletic Trainers Association (VATA). She is a Virginia Licensed Athletic Trainer, a Board of Certification Certified Athletic Trainer, a National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Certified Personal Trainer, an American Heart Association Certified (AHA) CPR/AED Instructor, an AHA Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider and REVIVE! Instructor.

In addition to teaching, Ms. Randolph is involved in her church as an advisor to the College and Young Adult Network (CAYAN), an Executive Committee Member and Mentor in G.E.M.’s: Young Women’s Mentorship Academy, and a Committee member of the REBOUND Foundation. She believes in the importance of educational empowerment through reading and life-long learning, as well as attention to self-care for life balance. 

Ms. Randolph is dedicated to preparing students for their future careers. She integrates real-world skills into the curriculum, focusing on specific skills such as communication, problem-solving, first aid skills, CPR/AED, therapeutic exercise, injury evaluation, rehab treatment, taping techniques, nutrition and teamwork. She also emphasizes the importance of career exploration through job shadowing, internships, and externships with local Athletic Trainers and sports medicine facilities to help students understand various career paths.
